Information regarding water and sewerage was once available with the local authorities, but it is now obtained on an application made to the water service company that serves the property. Such an enquiry should be made in every transaction, as it reveals:
- If the property has access to a foul water drainage that connects to the public sewer.
- If the property has access to a surface water drainage that connects to the public sewer.
- If there exist a water main within the boundary of the property, and
- If the property is connected to the public water supply.
In instances where the water from the property does not drain in to the public sewer, the prospective buyer will have to pay for maintaining the sewers and drains, and may also have to bear additional costs (to bring them up to adoption standards) when the water authority decides to adopt it.
